Bad news for job hunters
The figures are in and they make for pretty miserable reading….
The number of registered unemployed in the Canary Islands increased by 10,638 in March, up 4.67% from February. The total number is now a whopping 238,344. Over the last 12 months the number has risen by 79,502 people.
By sector, the number of people becoming unemployed since February is as follows:
- Agriculture, rose by 172 (+4.8%) to a total of 3,722
- Industry, rose by 487 (+4.6%) to a total of 10,921
- Construction, 1,721 (+3.4%) to a total of 51,602
- Services, 6669 (+4.4%) to a total of 154,877
Those leaving school and college are finding the job market particularly tough as the number of people looking for their first job increased by 1589 (+10.1%) to 17,222.
Expats arriving in Tenerife looking for a new life in the sun better print off a lot of CV´s for themselves as hotels, bars and restaurants are receiving record numbers. Competition is high even for low paid jobs such as waiters, cleaners and kitchen staff.
Even those who have learned to speak Spanish will struggle to find those elusive “indefinido” contracts as companies are reluctant to take on permanent staff in an uncertain economic environment.
Telesales, Telemarketing and “commission only” positions are still being widely advertised but this sector suffers from high staff turnover. Those deciding to return to the UK may find things just as bad back home although the advantage is that unemployment benefits and income support are easier to qualify for. Those opting to stay can only hope things are at their worst and can only get better.
